Many of us are not only familiar with the word “minister,” but we have strong associations with it. Most people from a Protestant background associate the word with the clerical leader of a congregation. Another word equally rich with strong associations is the word “missionary.” Whereas ministers are often thought of as the ordained leaders of churches, whose focus is upon their existing members, missionaries are often thought of as being those who go overseas to do ministry with non-churched people from other lands and cultures.
We are moving toward using the title “missioner” at Grace as a word which may help us begin to blur the lines between ministry within the congregation and ministry beyond it. With our ongoing emphasis upon Mission at Grace Church, we believe that this is an important step for us.
